Choosing Natural Stone Countertops for an Old Home: Kitchen Chronicle VII:

Our Experience with Discount Granite (Columbus, Ohio)

If you’re researching Discount Granite in Columbus, Ohio and wondering whether they’re worth visiting, our experience was overwhelmingly positive. From the warehouse staff to installation, the entire process was professional, respectful, and stress-free — something we don’t say lightly after years of renovations.

When we started our kitchen renovation, I seriously considered butcher block countertops. They felt fitting for an older home. That plan ended after a conversation with our electrician. He told me they need to be sealed every three months.

Three months.

That is not a maintenance schedule I see myself keeping up with, so butcher block quietly exited the chat.

I adore marble. Always have. But I know myself well enough to admit that staining would drive me absolutely crazy. We removed marble floors during our last major bathroom remodel, so I already knew marble and I were not long-term compatible.

So my husband and I started countertop hunting.

He wanted granite. I wasn't sold. Then I was also hesitant about inviting another company into our home after a previous bad experience with a local installer. That situation involved acetone, a leaking bottle, and a lot of responsibility dodging. It was one of those moments that makes you rethink how much trust you put into strangers working inside your house.

After a string of frustrating contractor experiences, we decided to handle most of this kitchen remodel ourselves (links to our Kitchen Chronicles can be found at the end). That meant when it came time to shop for countertops, I was cautious. Letting new people into your home can either restore your faith in humanity… or do the opposite.

Look at all of that lovely movement

Thankfully, this story goes in the good column.

After reading reviews, we decided to visit Discount Granite in Columbus.

The moment we stepped out of the car, I realized we had been there years ago. It felt familiar in the best way. We were greeted by a warehouse worker who may very well have been there the last time we visited about ten years ago. He was friendly, relaxed, and told us to take our time looking around and ask questions if we needed help.

I love a company that lets you browse without hovering. I usually know what I want the second I see it.

We found a quartzite slab that mimicked marble beautifully — the look I love without the marble maintenance — but I wasn’t completely sold on the coloring. We also forgot our measurements that first trip, which meant we couldn’t commit to anything yet.

The warehouse is cold, so dress warm if you go for a visit. But if you enjoy looking at stone options the way I do, you’ll have fun walking through their inventory.

On our second visit, we came prepared with measurements and photos of our kitchen layout, including a tricky jog around a cabinet and lazy Susan. This time we were ready to buy.

And surprisingly… we landed on granite.

The kitchen is not finished, but we are getting there, thank goodness

My husband prefers bold movement in stone. I lean quieter. Somehow we met in the middle and found what they call sage brush granite that worked for both of us. It was a nine-foot slab — and it was on sale for $199 for a Tier III product. We bought two on the spot.

One of the biggest things that impressed us: Discount Granite doesn’t install countertops, but they recommended an installer they regularly work with. We received a quote the same day and felt comfortable moving forward immediately. No runaround, no pressure.

Even better, they agreed to store our slabs until we were ready. At the time, our cabinets were still being sanded, stained, and waxed. We weren’t even finalized on layout yet. Their willingness to hold the stone took a huge weight off our shoulders.

Install day finally arrived, and Larry — the installer — called that morning to confirm. What we didn’t realize was that he and his two sons drive in from the Dayton area, pick up the stone, and then head straight to their installs. That’s a three-hour start to their day before they even arrive at your house.

They showed up at 11 AM, introduced themselves with handshakes, and treated our home with complete respect. I cannot tell you how rare it is for workers to introduce themselves anymore. It immediately set the tone.

They checked everything carefully, made sure we were happy before leaving, and even swapped remodeling stories with us. Larry showed photos of his own home projects and shared why he moved from Texas to Ohio — a story worth asking him about if you meet him.

When they left, I was grinning. After so many stressful renovation experiences, this one felt easy. Professional. Human. Positive.

We opted for a granite backsplash under the window. The remainder backsplash will be installed soon

My husband asked if they’d come back to polish and install a small extra piece in the future if we found the right piece for the slab. Absolutely — just coordinate through Discount Granite when they’re already scheduled in the area. Smart business, fair expectations, and clear communication.

That’s all anyone really wants when renovating: honesty, skill, and people who treat your home like it matters.

This experience did exactly that so I would highly recommend Discount Granite and Larry with this sons at The Granite Doctor.

For perspective, we were previously quoted $4,200 for countertops through another contractor. Our total through Discount Granite — slabs and installation — came to $1,271. We saved nearly $3,000 without sacrificing quality.

As homeowners, we’ve collected more renovation horror stories than we ever expected to. When you’ve been through enough bad experiences, you walk into every new project guarded. That’s just reality.

Working with Discount Granite and Larry with his sons, the installation team with The Granite Doctor reminded us that good companies still exist — the kind that show up, communicate clearly, respect your home, and take pride in what they do.

Our countertops look beautiful, but what we’ll remember most is how easy they made the process feel. After so many stressful contractor experiences, that kind of professionalism stands out. We’re grateful for the work they did in our home, and proud to share a review that reflects just how much this experience meant to us.
