How to Choose a Couch Cover That Matches Your Style and Needs While Having a Dog

Looking for a couch cover that complements your style and protects your furniture? This guide walks you through the process of choosing the perfect one for you.

Sofa Covers just may be the bane of existence of homes across the world.  Slight exaggeration?  Maybe, but good grief, can someone make one that stays put?  I have tried an actual fitted couch cover, comforters, blankets, etc... it can be quite frustrating when all you want to do is provide a bit of coverage to your couch.

Some folks want to cover up an old outdated couch, others desire a cover for them to protect the fabric and furniture, me?  I like a cover on our loveseat and couch to keep the pup hairs on the coverlet so I can easily remove and wash.  Then I can run the sweeper attachment over our couch easily.  Those pup hairs can get woven into fabrics, causing more work when I sweep the couch.  My husband is always telling me to work smarter, not harder... I like to think in this case that is exactly what I am doing.

So in case you are wondering why I am bringing up couch covers, I thought I would share with you one I found recently because it is so trial and error when you are looking to purchase one.  

Here is what I was searching for:

• A cover that would coordinate with the urn style lamps I purchased a while back
• Something that had a design on it, designs tend to cover any mishaps that can happen
• I wanted the design to go with my style (some may say Granny Style, but isn't that floral print so cute?) 
• After some research, I found I really wanted a quilted coverlet too that had a bit of weight to it

Measure your couch.

The first step in choosing a couch cover is to measure your couch. You’ll need to know the length, width, and height of the base and any cushions that you want to cover. This will help ensure that you choose a cover that fits properly and provides optimal protection for your furniture. Keep in mind that some covers may be stretchy or adjustable, but it’s still important to have accurate measurements before making a purchase.

Did I follow my own advice? Of course not, I saw a design I loved, and jumped in like always, of course. This is why I am advising you to be sure to measure your couch before you make a purchase to prevent returns or keeping something that may not work for you.

When I draped it over the couch, I was shy on fabric. I am finding we have a larger couch than most within the online market. No fear, I only purchased one, and so this lovely couch cover worked for our loveseat, win for me!

It does not fall all the way to the floor from the seat, but that was okay with me.  It covered enough of my loveseat to keep me happy and pup messes contained.  The side flaps cover the arm rests of our loveseat, protecting the arms as it should.  I have found they also stay in place even with a pup crawling over it and walking on the couch.    

Choose the material that suits you best.

Additionally, it’s important to select a material with colors or patterns that complement your style and decor needs.

I am not sure if the fact this is a quilted cover makes the difference, but it does not move much at all.  In fact, I decided to take photos of our new couch cover after it had been on all weekend without any tweaking.  Scary idea?  I do not think so, it gives you an idea of how this couch cover will perform.  

Do you see above there is a bit of movement at the top?  I like to make sure you are getting the idea of how things work.  I really do not like it when I see something and think, wow!  This will be amazing for my home, only to get it and find the picture was not accurate. 

I am convinced there is no such thing as the perfect couch cover, but I like to think I may have found something close.  As you can see, although it is not perfect, I am not constantly fussing with it and readjusting it, another win for me!

I thought a slight movement of the cover was much better than a total readjustment every time I sit and stand from the couch.  Our pup is constantly up and down, as I mentioned before, I did not adjust the cover for the entire weekend.  I wanted to see how well this couch cover would perform, and it did not disappoint.  

I will mention, our couch is covered in a heavy, almost tweed like fabric so I was unsure if the two fabrics together is why this cover has barely any movement or if this coverlet is truly a wonderful winning combination?  

Pick a color or pattern that matches your decor.

When selecting a couch cover, it’s important to consider not only the material but also the color or pattern that best complements your decor. If your room has a minimalistic aesthetic, solid colors may be the go-to option. On the other hand, if you’re going for something bold and eye-catching, opt for patterns or prints that feature bold hues such as reds, blues or greens. It’s also wise to select a color scheme that blends with the existing decor in your space. You don’t want a couch cover that clashes with other elements in the room, such as curtains or carpet. With some careful consideration and planning, you can choose a couch cover that adds an extra touch of style to your living space while protecting your furniture investment.

Are you loving the brighter colors?  I thought it was just perfect for spring, and I decided why not a loud and flowery touch to our tv room?  We need to liven things up a bit in there.      

Do you see that teal blue color?  I am in love with that color right now and have been sprinkling it throughout our home here lately.  It makes me smile and I feel like it is not my usual neutral go to, so there is a plus there too.  I even found I loved those pops of gold throughout it.  If you have followed along with us for very long, then you know this purchase was very out of character for me, but I actually love it.

Look for a cover that is easy to clean and maintain.

When choosing a couch cover, it’s important to consider its ease of cleaning and maintenance. If you have kids or pets in your household, you’ll want a fabric that is durable, stain-resistant and easy to clean. Avoid white or light-colored fabrics as they are prone to stains and can be difficult to clean. Opt for dark hues or patterns that can hide spills or stains. Additionally, select a material that is machine washable or easy to wipe clean with a damp cloth. This will make it easier for you to maintain the covers’ appearance in the long run. By taking these factors into consideration, you'll be able to choose a couch cover that not only matches your style but is also practical and easy to care for.

I'd also like to mention can you believe I went with an ivory background?  I know, crazy right, especially with a dog.  Well, for the price I decided to get what I really wanted.  I am convinced it will wash up perfectly since the fabric feels heavier than past covers I have had.  I'd also like to mention, this is a double sided cover, the exact same pattern is on both sides so if there is a major malfunction... I can flip it over after it is washed for a fresh look.  Ha, ha!    

I draped it over our loveseat and began tucking it into the cushions and along the side being sure it was tucked tightly.  The material is very soft to the touch being very much like a lightweight quilt for your bed.  Overall, I have to say I am happy with my purchase.  

Yesterday when it was pouring down rain, Bentley went out and of course was soaking wet.  When he came back in and jumped up on the loveseat, at first I thought oh no!  Then I thought to myself, this is why you purchased a cover, let it do it's job.  When he jumped down, there was no change in appearance and it stayed in place.    

Couch covers are not perfect, but this one is the perfectly imperfect choice for me. 

If you have ever had a couch cover then you know this looks pretty good for not having to fuss over it for an entire weekend.  

When I mentioned above, the fitted couch cover I had in the past, every time I would sit and stand, I would need to fix and adjust it, and push it back into the creases along the back of the couch.  I even added a pool noodle to the back, tucking it between the cushions along the back of our couch thinking it would help in keeping the fitted cover in place.  I can tell you it worked for a few hours and then back to the same old thing, constantly fixing.  I became so irritated with it, I finally removed it.  

I placed a king size comforter on our couch for the longest time, and of course I would need to move it around every time I would sit and stand.  A certain kiddo also found he liked it so much there were a few chews in it, but when they are in the chewing phase, you decide not to invest much money into items you know will not be sticking around for long.  

This was a last ditch effort in finding something for our tv room, and I have to say, so far so good.  I am happy with this purchase after two weeks and decided to finally share it with you.  So if you are in the market for a new couch cover, take a look at this one.  I am quite happy with my purchase.
