Tin Can Craft

Trash Talk: Turning Tin Cans into Trendy Planters with Panache!

Hey there, fellow Earth-conscious friends!  Are you tired of trashing your trash?  Do you crave a way to sassily showcase your green thumb while sticking it to wasteful habits?  Well, buckle up my friends, because we're about to embark on a journey of recycling rebellion and turn those mundane tin cans into fabulous planters that will leave your friends green with envy!

Tin Can Craft

Let's face it, we live in a throwaway society.  Everything is disposable, from relationships to fast food containers.  It's time to break free from this wasteful cycle and show a little love to our planet.  Enter the humble tin can - that versatile vessel of delicious canned goods that too often finds its way into the landfill.  It's high time we put those cans to good use, and what better way than transforming them into stylish planters?

First things first, gather those discarded cans.  The rusty ones, the dented ones, the ones that no longer spark joy.  With a little TLC, they'll become the stars of your indoor or outdoor garden.  Give them a good scrub, removing any labels and lingering odors.  Remember, we're going for fashionable flair here, not an eau de canned tomato perfume!

Once your cans are clean and fresh, let the fun begin!  Embrace your inner artist and let your creativity shine.  Paint them in vibrant colors, decorate them with funky patterns, decoupage them, or unleash your inner Picasso with abstract designs.  These little planters will be like works of art, transforming any dull corner into an Instagram-worthy oasis.

How to paint your planters:

Now, let's dive into the snazzy part!  Grab your sponge or paintbrush and let your creativity flow.  Let's begin with a black base coat, once the black paint has dried, it is time to bring out the Antique Gold Rub-n-Buff.  Use a sponge brush to apply it by blotting to the can, adding a touch of glamour and sophistication.  The result?  A planter fit for a diva!

But why stop there?  Let's try something different with the next two cans.  Embrace your experimental side and mix things up.  Blot the black craft paint and the Rub-n-Buff onto the tin cans simultaneously.  Watch as the colors blend and create a unique appearance that reflects your artistic spirit.

Now, let's talk functionality.

Did I mention creating a set of three small planters that can be easily swapped and repurposed?  Well, we can!  Fill them with faux flowers to brighten up any space, or use them as pen and pencil holders to add a touch of organization to your desk.  They can even become stylish makeup brush holders, keeping your beauty tools within easy reach.  The possibilities are truly endless!  Uh, umm... like how we create a silverware caddy a bit later... see, so many things we can make from tin cans!

What to do with tin cans

But wait, there's more!  To take your tin can planters to the next level of sophistication, why not add some quirky wooden cube feet?  Head to the Dollar Tree and grab a pack of wood cubes - they're perfect for this DIY adventure.  Glue them to the bottom of your planters and watch as they gain whimsical charm, giving your creations a unique touch.

Now, I have a confession to make.  Normally, I would recommend painting the bottom of the cans to ensure a polished finish... however, let's keep it between us - this time, I chose to ignore it.  Sometimes, we need to embrace imperfections and let our creations have a touch of not so perfectness only we know about.  If these planters were to be used beyond our home, I would advise painting the bottom for a seamless look.  But for now, it's our little secret!

Imagine chilling in your dining room, basking in the glory of your upcycled tin can planter when a friend walks in.  Their eyes widen, their jaw drops, and they can't help but ask, "Where on Earth did you find such stunning planters?"  That's your cue to unleash your cheeky side and say, "Oh, these old things?  Just some trash turned treasure.  I'm all about giving second chances."  Too much?  Well, we like to have fun around here so enlighten me, teehee.

Imagine the surprise on your friend's face when you fess up and say, these wonderful planters are actually old tin cans, reiterating you rescued them from the trash bin!  Do you see how I keep recreating our trash into treasures around here?  I am loving the results, how about you?

So, my crafty friends, let's take a break, free from the shackles of a throwaway society.  Let's turn trash into victory and transform those humble tin cans into stunning planters that make a statement.  It's time to embrace our inner up-cyclist and show the world that being eco-friendly can be bold, stylish, and oh-so-trendy.  Together, we can make a difference - one tin can planter at a time!

    1. Ha! I am so glad to hear I am not the only one Allyson. Sometimes I am like I need to be so professional and get it all perfect, and other days I am like, I am human... and in no way perfect!

  7. Those turned out nice! This gives me an idea but I see lace and burlap :) When I throw out a yogurt cup or a laundry detergent measuring cup, the thought runs thru mind mind if I could make something useful out of them. I absolutely cannot throw away pretty glass candle jars. Gonna make something with them, especially the pretty Yankee Candles jars with lids. Thanks so much for linking up at the #UnlimitedLinkParty 118. Pinned.
