Easy recipe with cube steak

My husband made a request for cube steak again.  Only, I like to be creative and try new recipes so I nixed his request for the same old, same old, or at least what I made last time.  I said oh no, we need to try something different.

With which he would reply if he were here, sometimes it is perfectly okay to have the same thing, you know?  That is where we differ, me always wanting to try something new and him liking the same tried and true recipes we have made before.  Don't get me wrong, he likes to try new things, but there are times where he just wants something I have down pat, and he knows what to expect instead of being my guinea pig.  Poor husband... always my taste tester.  Maybe he should get paid for his endeavors shhh, we won't tell him that.

I was so happy when he mentioned how tasty this recipe was despite the fact he did not have gravy which made me jump for joy because between you and me... I am not very fond of gravy.  For some reason I have never liked it much.  I was surprised he did not miss the gravy though because there are some things he just likes together, no if, and, or but about it.

Most gravy recipes I have seen are made with milk, but I made a mushroom soup gravy with the last cubed steak recipe I created.  Growing up we only had skim milk in the fridge which I find hilarious since my mother only buys organic whole milk now.  Just the other day she commented how disgusting skim milk was to which I chuckled and asked is that why we grew up on skim milk?

Last night when I decided I would try something new, I kept coming across chicken fried steak, and so I decided to figure it out on my own without doing any research on what others use most in their recipes.  Sometimes I just like to wing it and see how new recipes turn out.  I asked myself how difficult can this be?  You know what?  It was so easy peasy.

I skipped over to my new to me spick rack and pulled out a few spices, some all purpose gluten free flour since I did not think almond flour would be a good match for this cube steak recipe, my salt and pepper shakers, and away I went in creating a new recipe.

Since I have been cooking a while now... since I was 15, let's not do the math to figure out any further information about my age.  Teehee.  I knew I needed to begin with the flour and it would be my base, but then I thought about what flavor I was going for, or more like what I was in the mood for.  My go to tends to be onion and garlic, my two most favorite powders when seasoning dishes and in my cooking.  I considered paprika since I know it pairs well, but decided against it at the last minute.

Simple and Tasty Cube Steak Recipe for the Whole Family

What you need:
  1. 1 package of cubed steak, there were 4 total cube steak in my package
  2. 3 T gluten free all purpose flour
  3. 1 t parsley
  4. 1 t garlic powder
  5. 1 t onion powder
  6. 1/2 t black pepper
  7. Salt to taste

What you need to do:
  • Thaw cubed steak
  • Mix gluten free flour, spices, salt and pepper together, I used a paper plate for less mess cooking since cleaning up messes is not high on my list of things I can't wait to do every night in the evening, blah!
  • Remove cubed steak from package one at a time and dredge through flour mixture on both sides, no egg needed
  • Place in heated skillet with enough olive oil to coat the bottom of the skillet to prevent sticking
  • Cook each cubed steak on both sides for about 3 minutes or until turns golden brown
  • Remove from skillet and serve

Now I mentioned no egg for this recipe, have you taken a close look at the price of eggs lately?  My goodness, I think I just go through the motions when I order anymore, but here on our last order I was ordering for Christmas too and had planned some baking.  I nearly fell over when I added (2) cartons of eggs and it was nearly $12.00!  Talk about picking my jaw up off the floor!

I am thinking getting chickens and a coop is sounding better and better everyday, maybe grow our own veggies too.  My hat is off to those of you who need to feed growing children, I cannot imagine your grocery bills.  I feel for you, it is why I have been working on more cost effective meals and using what we have in the fridge before it goes bad.  I hate to be wasteful.

I made mashed potatoes since I knew hubby would appreciate that.  He has not had any in so long due to the potato shortage.  Oh, you didn't know about it?  Yeah, me neither until a few weeks ago.

I could not figure out why potatoes were being removed from my order every time I made an order for groceries.  Of course Google was right there to help me out and I found due to the weather earlier in the season, potatoes were experiencing a shortage.  If you did not already know like me, now you know why you cannot seem to locate them in the grocery stores or on your grocery orders.

I tried everywhere: Amazon, InstaCart, Giant Eagle, Meijer... no potatoes could be found!  Good thing there are other vegetables out there we can eat.

I found lettuce in the fridge stowed away in my lock & lock container.  They really do help in making foods last longer which let's face it we need them to last as long as we can these days!  I only suggest you do not wash your fruits or vegetables before you put them in the containers, wait until you are ready to use them.  The lettuce had been in the fridge for a little more than 2 weeks, probably closer to three weeks, and it was perfectly fine last night for dinner.  I made us both a salad, mine with red onion (my favorite addition to salads I make at home), a roma tomato for us both, and a bit of shredded cheese.  Yummy!

That's it, dinner was complete and everything considered, I pulled dinner off in about 24 minutes which included me cutting vegetables for our salads.  Talk about a quick dinner option.  I love it when I can get in and out with minimal clean up, don't you?  Give us a share if you like this recipe, and don't forget to pin for later:
