Frugal Decorating

Welcome, my fellow frugal decorators, to the whimsical world of our cozy cottage!  If you've been following along with our penny-pinching adventures, then you know I have a knack for transforming our humble abode on a budget.

It's how this blog came to life in the first place - a little over two years ago, a friend suggested I share my quirky decorating ideas, tips, and tricks with the world.  Who would've thought that my corny, yet creative mind and quirky personality would strike a chord with all of you delightful readers?

You, my friends, are the driving force behind my expanding ideas.  Your words of encouragement and your continued presence on this journey keep my creative juices flowing.  I can't thank you enough!

Now, let's get down to business.  From the beginning, my goal has never been about achieving fame (although a red carpet moment wouldn't hurt, teehee).

No, it's always been about sharing my humble home with all of you, and proving that you can have a stunningly decorated abode without breaking the bank.  Plus, I get to infuse my unique personality into the mix, who wouldn't love that, ha!  My hope is that you find inspiration for your own homes right here.

Frugal decorating

Frugal decorating is my passion, and I'm excited to show you how those Dollar Tree windchime pots have undergone a marvelous transformation.  As you know, my motto is "Use What you Have" so we can save, save, save for retirement some day.

Thrifty home styling

Did you know that these versatile pots can be used year-round, keeping up with the ever-changing seasons?  Yep, it's true!  Sure, I may have been fashionably late to the party when I initially transformed them into a trio of pots for a happy 4th of July vibe.  But now?  Oh boy, you're in for a treat as I reveal what they look like with just a few simple tweaks.

Say goodbye to those red, white, and blue flowers that graced our pots.  Done, done, and done - one by one, they were gone!  But fear not, the styrofoam eggs and Spanish moss remained.  What did I decide to put in their place?  Well, after a succulent-growing victory this year (I'm practically a succulent whisperer now, but that's a story for another time), I opted for a few faux succulents.  They're kind of my favorite, you know?

Repurpose and save

Earlier in the summer, I stumbled upon this gorgeous rose ribbon that was practically begging to be used, along with some delightful flower scatter.  The ribbon was a bit wide, so I cut it down for my mini pots... just another way to save money and make the ribbon road go a little further.

Let me tell you, the sight of flowers in our home always brings a smile to my face, so I simply couldn't resist creating a new vignette, incorporating many items from our "How to decorate house for July 4th" post.  Who says you need to spend a fortune to have a stylish home?  It's all about repurposing and reimagining what you already have.

Affordable design solutions

So, what's the secret to achieving amazing decor without emptying your wallet?  It's simple, my friends: move things around in your home.  Take that nightstand from your bedroom and give it a new life in the living room.  Swap that end table with the one in your bedroom.

Get creative with the knick-knacks you've collected over the years - create small vignettes that showcase your personality.  Oh, and let's not forget my latest obsession: decorating with tin cans!  I've been shuffling them from room to room, creating new displays that make me giddy with delight.

Update items with a few minor changes like we did today.  Nothing is set in stone, do you, it is your home afterall!  As you can see, not a lot changed with this little ole' update, and honestly the reason behind that?  I just wasn't into making big changes, plus... I like to show how you can make changes, the simple way.

Questioning other options you can do to decorate frugally?  Check out these suggestions:
  • DIY artwork: Create your own artwork to add a personal touch to your space.  You can paint, draw, or even create collages using materials you already have.  Frame them or use removable adhesive strips to display them on the walls.
  • Thrift store finds: Visit thrift stores, flea markets, or yard sales to find affordable decor items.  You may stumble upon unique and interesting pieces that can add character to your space without breaking the bank.
  • DIY window treatments: Instead of expensive curtains, consider making your own window treatments.  You can use fabric, sheets, or even repurpose shower curtains to create unique and affordable window coverings.
  • Repurpose and upcycle: Look for items around your home that can be repurposed or upcycled.  For example, mason jars can become tissue holders.

So, my dear follow budget-savvy decorators, let's dive headfirst into the world of frugal decorating and unleash our creativity.  Who needs a bottomless wallet when you have ingenuity and a touch of quirkiness?  Embrace the joy of transforming your space, one penny-pinching idea at a time.  Get ready to create a home that reflects your unique personality without breaking the bank.  It's time to let your frugal decorating adventures begin!

  2. Cara, I love how it all turned out. I love those pots and the added ribbon. I often reuse items that I have purchased and change the look for the upcoming season. The pots look lovely with the added faux succulents. The flower blossoms are such a beautiful touch. Thank you for sharing.

    1. Thank you Donna, I am a big fan myself. It has always been my mission to have the home we wanted, but pay as little as possible. We splurge every now and then, but it's almost a game for me to see how low I can go, and how creative I can get.
