If you love frugal decorating and cottage‑style charm, this post will show you simple ways to transform your home on a budget. I’ll share how I updated Dollar Tree windchime pots using items I already had, plus easy repurposing ideas you can use in any room. These budget‑friendly decorating tips work for small spaces, cozy cottages, and anyone who loves quirky, creative style.

Frugal Decorating Ideas for a Cottage Home

Welcome, my fellow frugal decorators, to the whimsical world of our cozy cottage!  If you've been following along with our penny-pinching adventures, then you know I have a knack for transforming our humble abode on a budget.

This blog started a little over two years ago when a friend suggested I share my quirky decorating ideas with the world.  Who knew my corny humor and cottage-loving personality would resonate with so many of you?

Your encouragement keeps my creativity flowing, and I'm so grateful you're here.

My goal has never been fame (although a red-carpet moment wouldn't hurt, teehee). It's always been about showing you that you can create a beautiful home without breaking the bank - and you can infuse your personality into every corner while doing it.

How I Upcycled Dollar Tree Windchime Pots for Cottage Decor

Frugal decorating is my passion, and today I'm excited to show you how those Dollar Tree windchime pots got a charming little makeover.  As you know, my motto is "Use What you Have" - because saving money now means more for retirement later.

Thrifty home styling with vintage and DIY Dollar Tree windchimes turned planter pots with faux succulents and rose ribbon tied around pots

These little pots are surprisingly versatile and can be used year-round. I first transformed them into a patriotic trio for the 4th of July, but now it was time for a fresh look.

The red, white, and blue flowers? Gone.
The styrofoam eggs and Spanish moss? Staying.
The new stars of the show? Faux succulents - my latest obsession.

Step‑by‑Step: How I Updated These Pots on a Budget

  1. Remove the seasonal flowers from the pots.

  2. Keep the styrofoam and moss in place — no need to buy new filler.

  3. Add faux succulents for a fresh, year‑round look.

  4. Trim the rose ribbon to fit the pots (stretch that ribbon budget!).

  5. Add floral scatter for a whimsical cottage touch.

  6. Style the pots in a vignette using items you already have around the house.

This update took just a few minutes and cost almost nothing — my favorite kind of project.

Why This Works in a Cottage Home

Cottage style is all about charm, warmth, and personality. This little update works because:

  • Faux succulents add soft, natural texture

  • The rose ribbon brings in vintage cottage sweetness

  • The pots feel handmade and whimsical

  • Repurposing keeps the look authentic and lived‑in

Cottage homes shine when they feel collected, not purchased.

Budget‑Friendly Decorating Tips Using What You Already Have

Frugal decorating is all about creativity, not cost.

  2. Cara, I love how it all turned out. I love those pots and the added ribbon. I often reuse items that I have purchased and change the look for the upcoming season. The pots look lovely with the added faux succulents. The flower blossoms are such a beautiful touch. Thank you for sharing.

    1. Thank you Donna, I am a big fan myself. It has always been my mission to have the home we wanted, but pay as little as possible. We splurge every now and then, but it's almost a game for me to see how low I can go, and how creative I can get.
