DIY Pearl‑Covered Sconce Makeover (Upcycle an Outdated Wall Sconce Into Cottage‑Style Decor)
Searching for ideas to makeover an outdated sconce you’ve had sitting around the house? Don’t toss it — transform it. This pearl‑covered sconce makeover is charming, unexpected, and the perfect way to give an old brass fixture a brand‑new life.
If you love cottage‑style decorating, upcycling, or turning “what you already have” into something beautiful, this project will make your heart skip a beat.
The Inspiration Behind This Pearl‑Covered Sconce
You know how I love giving forgotten pieces a second chance. But not every idea I dream up becomes an A+ project — I’ll let you decide where this one lands.
Years ago, I saw a chandelier dripping in pearls on Pinterest. It was dramatic, glamorous, and completely unforgettable. I tucked that idea away, thinking, One day…
I even tried convincing Mr. Vintage that we should pearl‑wrap our dining room chandelier. But then came the questions:
Would the weight be too much?
Was the old chandelier reinforced?
Would it come crashing down mid‑dinner?
I’m frugal, not foolish — so I shelved that idea.
But then one day, while digging through the basement for my next project, I found a $2 brass sconce I’d thrifted ages ago. Suddenly, the pearl chandelier idea resurfaced… and this time, it felt right.
Materials You’ll Need
Old brass sconce
White gesso paint
Hot glue gun + glue sticks
99‑ft roll of small craft pearls
Scissors
Cardboard work surface
- Patience (lots of it)
How to Make a Pearl‑Covered Sconce
1. Paint the sconce
I used white gesso paint — not perfectly, because “perfectly imperfect” is my motto. Let it dry completely.
2. Prep your pearls
I ordered a 99‑foot strand online (yes, ninety‑nine feet). The pearls I had on hand were too large, but these were perfect.
3. Start gluing
Using a small hot glue gun, begin attaching the pearls to the sconce. I worked in one continuous strand so the pearls flowed smoothly.
4. Cover the back plate
This part is monotonous — glue, press, glue, press — but it’s worth it. I hummed the Jeopardy theme song to myself to stay entertained.
5. Move to the candle holders
Glue pearls around each candle cup until they’re fully covered. This is where the piece starts looking fancy pants.
6. Problem‑solving the arms
I originally tried wrapping the pearls around the curved arms… and it was a disaster. Too tight, too awkward, too messy.
Enter Mr. Vintage with the brilliant idea: Glue pearls to the front and back of each arm instead of wrapping them.
Genius. It worked beautifully.
7. Step back and admire
It’s cottage, it’s fancy, it’s unexpected — and it’s definitely a conversation piece.
Why This Works in a Cottage‑Style Home
This project blends:
Vintage charm
Soft, feminine details
A touch of whimsy
A whole lot of personality
It’s the kind of piece that looks like it came from a quirky antique shop — the best kind of cottage décor.
Styling the Finished Sconce
I added:
Small Christmas ornaments (because why not?)
A French bee magnet for fun
A few variations until I found the perfect look
I rarely leave anything the same for long — tweaking is part of the joy.
Notes & Lessons Learned
Hot glue burns hurt more than they used to. Finger covers are your friend.
- Work in small glue sections to avoid bumps or hardened glue ridges.
Continuous pearl strands are easier to manage than loose beads.
A mini glue gun helps reach tight areas around the candle holders and arms.
Wrapping pearls around curved arms doesn’t work — gluing them to the front and back gives a cleaner finish.
Gesso provides a better base coat on metal than standard craft paint.
This project uses more pearls than you expect, so keep extra on hand.
A Little Note Before You Go
Projects like this remind me why I love upcycling so much — taking something found in the basement and turning it into something joyful. It doesn’t have to be perfect. It just has to make you smile when you walk past it. And this one does that for me every single time.
Don’t be afraid to try something new. You might surprise yourself.

I liked it when you had just painted it white and it was sort of vintage-looking. Sorry, too gaudy for me with the pearls. But I totally agree that crafting keeps us sane!
