Creating a Cozy, Content Home Through Simple DIY, Frugal Decorating, and Vintage‑Inspired Living
For years, you could find me curled up in the evenings, scrolling the internet for new DIY projects and hunting down vintage furniture at online auctions. I loved the thrill of the search — and honestly, our home is now bursting at the seams because of it. But you know what? I kind of love that.
Why? Because we’ve found some truly beautiful, high‑quality pieces that make our home feel warm, personal, and lived‑in. Eventually, I had to stop browsing auctions because… where would I even put another piece?
My mom joked that we’d need to move to a bigger house if I brought home one more item. But this is our forever home. We love our neighborhood, we love our routines, and we love the life we’ve built here. It reminds me of the older woman I once mentioned in Making a Home — the one who said she didn’t need a bigger house, just a meaningful one.
Home as a Haven
For us, our home is our haven. It’s where we want to spend all of our spare time. We’ve always believed that if you’re happy at home, who needs fancy vacations? Do you love being at home as much as we do?
Our goal is to live in our own “vacation home,” right here, every single day. Vacations are short‑lived… but your home? The memories built here last a lifetime. That sounds like the perfect long‑term vacation to me.
🌿 Choosing Simplicity and Contentment
Over the years, I’ve realized I’m a simple gal. I don’t need much to make me happy. We were homebodies long before it was trendy. Being at home is the most wonderful thing in the world — it’s our safe place. And we’re truly thankful for that, because not everyone can say the same.
I’ve also learned to be pretty frugal. You may be surprised to hear I wasn’t always this way. I like nice things, but one day I sat back and thought long and hard about what really matters. Material things are just that — things. We can’t take them with us, and we don’t have children to leave them to. So why keep accumulating?
Now… does that mean I won’t find the next best thing at an auction or on Amazon? Absolutely not. A gal still has her decorating needs.
Happiness for me looks like:
Simple projects. Simple joys.
🚗 Why I Stopped Chasing “Bigger and Better”
Mr. Vintage has had his share of fancy cars, and he still enjoys them. But do we need them? Not really. My little CRV — lovingly named Bessie — gets me from point A to point B, and that’s enough.
We even went car shopping two summers ago, and nothing excited me. Not one. I test‑drove so many, but none made me as happy as chauffeuring Peanut around in Bessie. And honestly, why buy a brand‑new car just for Peanut to slobber on the windows and shed all over the seats? He acts like a lunatic when someone gets too close to the car.
So I chose contentment. As long as Bessie runs, she stays.
🏠 Learning to Love the Home You Have
When I used to scroll through photos of big, beautiful homes, I’d wonder how much money it would take to make ours look similar. How many contractors would I need? How many projects? How much time?
Then I realized something: I don’t need a mansion. I just need creativity — and a teeny‑tiny budget.
I’ve always been drawn to older homes because of their craftsmanship and charm. Working in a construction‑based environment, I talk to homeowners every day. And it breaks my heart when someone calls to demolish an older home that just needs a little TLC. Some of those calls have made me physically sick. Those homes were built with care, detail, and pride.
🐾 The Real Reason We’re So Content
And honestly? One of the biggest reasons we’re so content is Peanut. That little guy brings us joy every single day — even when he’s being devious. He reminds us that happiness really does live in the simplest moments.
How Do You Create a Cozy Home on a Budget?
Creating a cozy home on a budget starts with appreciating what you already have. Rearranging furniture, refreshing décor with paint, adding thrifted or vintage pieces, and tackling simple DIY projects can completely transform a space. Focus on warmth, texture, and personal touches — not price tags. A cozy home is built through intention, not expense.

Right there with you. We enjoy our home, being at home and working on our home. And a vintage Wagoneer sounds dreamy!!
ReplyDeleteHome is where our heart is Kim! We are glad we are not the only ones who enjoy being at home. The older we get, the more we want to be here.
DeleteLove that big, long, four cushion couch!!
ReplyDeleteThank you Dee, you will never believe the deal we got on it either, I was amazed when it all came together at such a wonderful price. We found it at Pottery Barn Outlet and it was all a fluke, but so happy it turned out the way it did.
