When to Splurge

When we purchased this home, there were custom curtains in every room.  Of course, the colors did not match my vision of the rooms in our home, minus one room.  The living room has that six foot by 9 foot window and finding curtains for it was proving to be a real road block for me.

I am quite fond of French pleat curtains which is what was in every room of this home.  Had the colors matched my color schemes, I may not have changed them out.  The color pink is what was in the living room.  While I like pink in some areas of a home, I did not visualize pink in our living room.

      Before:

Such a lonely room with my three pieces of furniture and if you recall, I did leave the living room like this while I was collecting... I would not change that decision though because then I would not have the pieces I found along the way.  Stick to your guns.

After:

We wanted velvet curtains in a neutral tone.  One of the shops I used to frequent had an interior designer working there and she said she could help me with custom curtains.  I was pretty excited to give it a try and am I ever glad I did.  I ordered velvet material from Ballard Designs and she had the curtains made for each window, each one is lined, and we have the French pleat as well.  I love it when a plan comes together.  (Oh yes, the leg lamp was a new addition this year, Mr. Vintage had to have it and he wanted it front and center in the living room window for Christmas, so the tree got moved out and the lamp moved in.  Sometimes, you learn to compromise and let them have what they want.  Ha!)

So sorry, the lighting is not the best this time of year and being an older home, no overhead lights.  They only had lamps in each room.  This is not something we changed in the living room.

I will say I spent more on these curtains than I did all of the furniture in the room, but where else was I going to find curtains for that large of a window without them being custom?  No where, I looked high and low for them and was so disappointed when I could not find them.  (Of course, you know I can be very frugal when it comes to furniture so I felt I could justify the curtains.)  I decided to not settle, save my pennies, and make my vision come to fruition.  Stay the path and make sure you get what you want even if you have to save for something.  It will all be worth it in the end.

Yes, I have French pleat sheers too, I am old school like that.  I love the look and I tend to be an old soul...  always marching to the beat of a different drum.
